EU GDPR’s effective date was back in May of 2018, and yet many companies are still working to comply with these regulations. To complicate matters further, many states are working on similar regulations to protect citizens and consumers privacy. This lag in compliance may seem counterintuitive since we have all seen a steady stream of notifications on apps, websites and subscription services. According to research from Talend, approximately 98 percent of companies have updated their data privacy policies for GDPR, but in fact, as many as 70 percent of global companies are failing to meet the data compliance requirements under GDPR.  For example, individuals who are requesting copies of their personal data are not getting that information within the 30-day period, which violates a GDPR mandate. Additionally,  individuals who are requesting “to be forgotten”, as provided for under GDPR, are not actually being forgotten.

The reality is that many businesses are falling short of their GDPR obligations even though there is a very high rate of adoption of GDPR claims in privacy policies. One major contributing factor to this is that businesses are struggling with discovering, storing and organizing customer data, and their ability to access that data to respond timely to GDPR requests. The ability to solve this problem rests in having a seamless and integrated master data management capability that covers the entirety of a company’s business, combined with a strong data discovery tool. This is where WhamTech SmartData Fabric® security-centric distributed virtual data, master data and graph data management, and analytics solutions with data discovery, comes in. WhamTech enables companies to find an individual’s personal data wherever it resides, so they can provide the required copies as requested. Further, WhamTech enables companies to “erase” the information upon request as mandated by GDPR, whether that be anonymization or deletion.
